Looking for advice on which GPS to purchase to act as backup for current nav systems. All the bells and whistles are not necessary for my purposes. Thanks in advance.

Jerry,

I have a Garmin 45XL which has been superceded by the model 48 and I love it. I use it for the primary GPS receiver and am very pleased.

I take it with me on other boats to serve as a backup when I am off with friends and to log waypoints which I may want to use in the future. It has the capability for NEMA 0183 interface and also PC interface and can be powered off the boat batteries as well as the internal batteries.

Hope this gives you some insight!

I prefer the Garmin 12XL. 12 channel with a "patch" antenna. The antenna is far less susceptible to damage than the helix antenna on the 45 and 48. The 12XL will utilize the same remote antenna as the 45 and 48 by using the 6" mcx to bnc adapter. Bottomline is that you can't go wrong with any 12 channel Garmin.

i use a magellan 2000XL. works fine, lasts 24h on 4 AA batteries and will receive signals belowdecks. it is one of the cheapest on the market and is waterproof. what more could a sailor want?
