CD26

Recently came acoss a "CD26" which resembles a 25D in size but is powered by an outboard. Would appreciate comments on this model, such as how the outboard behaves with such a large boat and how suitable it is for cruising. Thanks.

Tom,

I have owned a CD26, Hull #2 since it was new in 1985. It is fitted with the orginal outboard which is a Yamaha 9.9 HP four stroke. That engine has a 15 amp alternator, 25 inch skeg, electric start. The prop is 11-1/2 diameter with only a 6 inch pitch. LOTS OF THRUST. Easily does 5.2 knots at low RPM. It sips gas about a rate of about 16-18 KM/gal. There is room for two six gallon tanks next to the engine but I use two 3 gallons instead. The engine came with an orginal 3 gallon tank. I have had no problems with performance sailing Block Island Sound, Long Island Sound, Cape Cod or the Chesapeake Bay. I had some very early problems with salt corrosion after two years since the engine sits in the water all the time. Took care of that with a built-in fresh water flush modification that I did with the engine.

Besides the outboard CD26 version there is also a CD26D version which has the built-in diesel engine. The sail plan is identical to the CD25D. It is only about 1 inch deeper in draft and the additional length is really attributed to longer aft overhangs associated with making more aft space for an engine compartment. In 1985 the boat went for about $24.9K in the very basic version vs. about $38K for the CD25D. A lot of features of the CD26 were additional cost. This included lifelines, opening ports, batteries, curtains, head, stove, instruments, bilge pumps, stern rail, etc. etc. You could easily option it up to the cost and features of the CD25D. It was introduced as a lower cost entry into the Cape Dory line but while retaining the quality. I have posted a couple of site messages concerning the boat.
I think you can find them by doing a "search" at the top of the information board with the key word "CD26".

I have owned a CD26 for the last five years. It's been a great boat for us and the only reason she's for sale now is we've bought a Cape Dory 33.

The outboard (an Evinrude 9.9) has worked well for us. The only issue I have with the boat is that the normal problems of backing a full keeled boat are made worse by having the prop behind the rudder. The Evinrude would not turn more than a few degrees, so there was little help there. Still, we got her in and out of the Charleston City Marina with as much as 3 knots of tidal current running.

My opinion: good boat, as you'd expect from Cape Dory. Now, if anyone would like to know more about a CD26 for sale in Charleston SC, just let me know.
