I just got a survey report on a CD25 (1976). I told the surveyor to inspect the boat with blue-water use in mind. He said the hull-deck joint was done with sealant only - no bolts, much less thru-bolts. He also said the hull thickness, and therefore it's blue-water suitability, could not be determined because of the inner liner.
Does anyone have any knowledge of the suitability of the 25 for blue-water use? Scantlings, hull/deck joint, over-all structural strength, etc? I'd hate to turn down this boat unless I'm absolutely sure... And I'd hat to take it without that same sureness...
Thanks!

My 1975 CD25 has thru bolts on the hull to deck joint. Lay on the bunk and reach your hand up under the liner. You have access to some of the nuts here. Also remove the teak plugs in the head area. You can reach some of the bolts this way also. Awkward, but do-able.Steve Bischoff wrote: I just got a survey report on a CD25 (1976). Check out this web site,

This site gives you the ability to compare the design of one boat against another. A 1976 CD25 is listed. You will find that the design,in all instances but one, equals the the best of the best!
The one exception is in comfort motion. A small boat will get bounced around more than a big one.
No getting around the fact that the Queen Mary will rock and roll less than her smaller kin!

Re: Cape Dory 25 hull/deck joint
Don't look for a different boat, look for a different surveyor! If this boat doesn't have bolts thru the joint it's the first one I've ever heard or seen of. I owned Dauntless, my CD25 for 20 years before the reality of 4 children forced me to move to a CD28. Mine certainly had thru-bolts and never a problem in the joint. I used a hole saw on the hull once and the piece was a half inch thick. The tech at the boatyard said, "that thing is built like a battleship". Dauntless was capable of taking a lot more than her crew ever wanted to! Pop inside the lockers and you should be able to see the bolts in that area. I can't believe Cape Dory didn't put them in. If they're not there some maniac must have removed them. If they're there, get a refund and hire a different surveyor. If I can provide more info send E-mail or call me at 414-762-3773.
