Finishing interior teak

Post by Jerry Hammernik »

OK gang, I've been following all the discussion about Sikkens, Tuff Shield, etc. But what about the interior teak. Oil?, Varnish?, What brand? Especially what to do to preserve the look of the teak and holly sole. Thanks in advance

Jerry,
CAUTION, whatever you do, do NOT attempt to sand the Teak & Holly Sole. CD made it with a T&H vaneer, that is VERY thin. Even a light sanding will go right through it! If the internal teak is in good shape, I would simply use a good grade cabinet cleaner/wax. For the sole, if someone has varnished it, you could strip it, apply a single part teak cleaner, and then teak oil it. That should bring it back as near as original as you will be able to get it. And, no, it will not be slippery if oiled. Hope this helps......

Jerry,

I have used about everything on the exterior of the boats and Sikkens lasts longer than anything else I have found over the last 20 years!! It does have its drawbacks, but it is rugged.

Interior wise, the OCtober 1979 CD Owners Manual states "Interior wood trim should be oiled periodically to maintain its appearance with Pentavar or other good quality teak oil. The interior paneling on the Cape Dory 25 27, and 28 has a pheonolic veneer. Surfaces should be filled with a touch-up crayon or seam filler. "Weldwood Blendstick # 707 Africa Mahogany" and "# 724 Teak" are good color matches. Minor surface scratches in the teak veneer on the Cape Dory 30 may be gently sanded out with 200 grit sandpaper."

I did finally put some satin varnish on the sole of MOON CHILD and it
seems to be durable and not especially slippery when wet. With the shower and the rest of the water, it became a necessary project.

Good quality materials after a careful and long preparation are the secrets to this project's success!

Best Wishes,

Jerry,

I used Interlux Polyurethane varnish on the interior teak of our CD25 and it held up excellently over the years. The varnish seals the wood and prevents it from getting dirt or mildew. Once you varnish the teak, the only maintenance you will have, afterwards for 10+ years, is to wipe with a damp cloth. A minimum of four coats is needed. More is better of course. It is alot of work, but, once it's done, it's done! And it looks great!

I didn't put any finish on the sole, but, I have heard some favorable comments about Interlux's Schooner varnish for that. Apparently, that is what Morris Yachts use on their boats. We are planning to refinish the sole of our Tartan 34 with the Schooner varnish this season.

My $.02, FWIW.

>>Lion's Paw<<

Nope, not Penn State, I'm Upper Iowa University and I'd be dammed if I'd name her Peacock (what the hell kind of a name is that for a sports team! I almost didn't go there because of it.)

The Lion's Paw is a seashell. Robb White wrote a book called the Lion's Paw back in the 40's. Dad is missing in the Pacific during the war and son runs off with the boat to keep his uncle from selling it. Two runaways from an EGANAHPRO, (That's ORPHANAGE if you're seeing the sign over the gate from the inside) stowaway on the boat. Ben is sure if he finds a Lion's Paw (seashell) his Dad will return. After many adventures they find one and Dad comes home and adopts the two stowaways. Read the story to my 2 oldest daughters when they were little and they decided the next boat would be named Lion's Paw.

Sorry you asked?
Jerry
