The California grizzly bear (Ursus californicus) was designated official State Animal in 1953.Tom Foley wrote: What is the significance of the bear on the CD burgee?
Before dying out in California, this largest and most powerful of carnivores thrived in the great
valleys and low mountains of the state, probably in greater numbers than anywhere else in the
United States. As humans began to populate California, the grizzly stood its ground, refusing to
retreat in the face of advancing civilization. It killed livestock and interfered with settlers. Less
than 75 years after the discovery of gold, every grizzly bear in California had been tracked down and killed.
The last one was killed in Tulare County in August 1922, more than 20 years before the authority to regulate
the take of fish and wildlife was delegated to the California Fish and Game Commission by the State
Legislature.
Re: Alligator
Since this web and therefore 'club" has become nationwide (isn't the internet great!) I would wonder if people like me in Florida should replace the bear with the Gator?? a little local color.

Re: Alligator
How about a Maine potatoe or a dead lobster like we have on our license plates?

Re: Alligator
No "potatoe" for Maine. (Maybe Indiana . . . with a picture of Dan Quayle on the burgee)

Meaning of Bear on Burgee
The grizzly bear has been the symbol of California from the start of its history as a part of the United States. It appeared on the California Bear Flag, symbol of the revolt against Mexico leading to the California Republic. The Republic lasted 27 days and was a historic way station on the path to California's becoming part of the United States.Tom Foley wrote: What is the significance of the bear on the CD burgee?
The California grizzly bear was designated the official State Animal in 1953.
Blue and gold were the school colors of the University of California, Berkeley beginning in 1875. They came into use as the California state colors and were officially designated as such in 1951.

Re: Alligator or Something
Seriously, Tom, we Mainers could put a pine tree or north star on our burgee. They're both on the state seal. Come to think of it, so is a moose.
