Hello all,
A friend of mine is considering a Southern Cross 28 purchase. He is concerned that although the boat is built like a tank and is extremely seaworthy, it may not be very desirable in light winds. I'm sure somebody out there must have come across one in their travels. Any info would be appreciated regarding its sailing abilities in all types of weather, etc.

Yes....good boat. canoe stern, wheel steering. Was made by C.E. Ryder, Bristol, RI...same as the builder of my SeaSprite. Saw and been on a few of them. Is he looking at one 80-85? Cutter rig.
Gilmer design. A very stable cruising boat. If you need a photo copy of the orginal brochure I could e-mail a copy to you....(I still believe I have one). Light wind????? Oh I don't know what you might be comparing it to. It is not a racer but I believe its under structure is more "cut away" than the CDs.

I looked at several Southern Cross 28s before buying a CD27. I think that many of these heavily built boats get the "slow in light airs" criticism. Sure, they are a bit slower but I am one of the few year round sailors and the only one out there when the breeze is really up because of the heavy build. I'll take the sturdy boat any day.
