Seal-a-Meal

Post by Joe Brown »

Does anyone know where I can locate a dealer or maker of the highly-touted Seal-A-Meal equipment so popular with many cruisers? This is a system to seal meals such as stews in special plastic bags, remove the air with a special tool, then freeze for later use. Any advice will be much appreciated. -Joe Brown, CD "Caprice," Rockport, Maine

Joe,

We have a similar product called Foodsaver. Does a great job! You can reach their customer support line at 1-800-777-5452 to find out who distributes their product. The company name is THE CABLE KITCHEN located at 340 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107.

P.S.
The bags are reuseable, but be cautious about cleanliness!

We purchased one of these units before we went cruising - it worked fine at first and then it quit. I sent it back as directed and they refused to fix it - said they had no record of my having purchased it. I had sent in the warranty and registration card but they sent the unit back without being fixed. I love the concept but it was an expensive lesson. Since I notice that someone else answered your query I will try their distributor info and see if I can get anything done - otherwise I have an abundance of supplies for the unit. By the way, we chartered out of Rockport several years ago and loved it.

as a sometimes backpacker, i'd suggest that you think about drying food to take cruising...storage is too easy...no spoilage...no refrigeration. just rehydrate and enjoy. You might read alan kesselheim's the lightweight gourmet. oh, food dryers last and last and last
