Rudder Removal (CD25)

Post by Brett I. Miller »

I have noticed some delimation on the backside of my rudder-post and it's probably time to tackle it. In order to do it right the rudder has to come off and I've not done this before. Any advice on how to appoach this job would be appreciated. I'm particularly curious about the mechanics of taking the rudder off -- it appears to me that either (1) the boat has to be lifted or (2) a hole has to be dug.

Also, does the end of the rudder post just slip out of that "cup" at the end, or is it more complicated than that?

Whatever insight anyone is willing to provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This topic of rudder removel was discussed a few weeks ago. Search backwards and you'll find a reply discribing how a CD rudder is removed. My interpretation is that it is not simple. The boat has to be lifted because the rudder is removed from that direction. If I remember correctly, the glass has to be removed over the retaining pins in the lower gudgeon. These pins are driven through to allow removal of the lower gudeon and then the rudder. I would maybe consider attempting to repair the delamination without removing the rudder. Good Luck?
