Engine Bed Motor Mount Problem

Engine Bed Motor Mount Problem
We are the owners of a 1986 CD 40 that we bought from the original owner in 1996. When we acquired the boat there was a considerable amount of rust to the engine mounting bed and they have continued to rust. The forward starboard mount is almost rusted thru and we are wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what repairs were undertaken. Does anyone have any ideas for preventative maintenance to curb continuing rust.
Re: Engine Bed Motor Mount Problem
Continuous rust may reflect a problem with galvantic action. Check your zinc anodes. I sounds like the boats wants to ground through the engine beds. Replacing the motor mounts is not a difficult job if you can get exact replacements. Cape Dory did at one time fabricate thier own mounts which may not be available. Your diseal manufacturer should be able to help you with an after market replacement.: We are the owners of a 1986 CD 40 that we bought from the original owner in 1996. wonder what caused the rust? If it were the forward port mount which is right under the salt water pump (assume you have a 4-108 also) and if it leaked could cause rust.It is not likely galvanic action as the motor mount beds are fiberglassed to the hull and there is no path for electrons to the water.
West marine sell a phosphoric acid that 'stops' rust by reacting with it. You can then paint it. But I guess I'd want to know where it came from in the first place!

Re: Engine Bed Motor Mount Problem
Will,
Scrub all of the rust that you can off of the mounts and paint them. Once that is done keep the engine sump dry. Find the source of the water. The mounts on my '36 are rusty, but not bad enough to look weak in any way. The previous owners apparently never cleaned out the engine sump. Salt water is brutal on most forms of steel. If the glassed in mounts on the hull side of the rubber isolators fail it sounds expensive. If the rusted metal is on the engine side of the rubber isolators then you can unbolt it and have new parts made.
