Perry Nuts

I was on the phone to a marine supply house getting ready to order a new perry nut for my CD31. I had my owners manual out and was ready for any questions they could throw at me. Shaft size...no problem, prop size...ditto, nut size...got it, LH or RH......oh o ! I doesnt say oh no Mr Bill !!!
Well just send me one of each, they cant be that expensive...wanna bet???.........I guess thats why the previous owner switched to donut zincs.....
So fellow Dorians...If I have a RH prop do I have a RH Perry nut? or are the threads opposite?.... (the guy at the supply house didn't know either).....Any help would be appreciated

You have RH threads on you shaft. You might also want to post the supply house you are using for others info. I use Havre de Grace Marine in Havre de Grace, MD. They stock them.

John: Right hand or left hand does not refer to the thread direction on the shaft. RH or LH refers to the direction that the blades are twisted on the prop which has to do with which way the prop shaft turns. All perry nuts are a normal right hand thread and are held in place with a cotter pin so they can't unscrew with prop direction.

In fact you can put a LH prop on and go forward in reverse if you ever lose your forward gear. You've got a beautiful boat.

I had a Perry nut on my 25D. They are made by a Mr. Perry in CA and cost about $25 each. You have to put on a new nut each time you replace the zinc. I took off the Perry and got one of the replaceable bronze housings that take dispsoable zincs (~$6.00) from West Marine.
Basically, it is a bronze housing that screws onto the end of the prop shaft and is secured by a cotter pin. It replaces the prop nut. The zinc is secured with a SS bolt in the end of the zinc. Put a dab of 3M 5200 on the bolt and it won't back out. Very neat system.

Go to WEST MARINE and get the "C" size, it will fit been using this for years on my 31. These are replacable(zinc).

Since I have to change them myself, with the boat in the water, every 4 months or so, the donut zinc which wraps around the prop shaft is easier for me to install than the perry nut, plus I don't have enough space aft of the prop itself. My donut zinc lasts approx 4 or 5 months, but that is because I keep my A/C and refrigerator going at all times. Also the donut cost $8. vs. the $25 plus shipping charges for the perry.

I don't know if it's "proven" or not, but I like the perry nut because one of the areas that is particularly prone to electrolysis are the thin edges of the prop. Having the zinc as close as possible seems like it would be better. Zincs for the Perry Nut are about the same price as donut zincs and although I've never weighed them, seem like they would weigh a little less than a donut zinc or at least not significantly more so that shipping should be a push. My boat lives in a "hot" marina so I have both a donut zinc on the shaft AND a Perry Nut and in a year's time there's not much left of either of them. If you haven't got room for a Perry Nut, I wouldn't think it's worth hollowing out the rudder to use one though. Nothing wrong with a donut especially if you don't notice any electrolytic action anywhere when you haul out. Check the through hulls for a pink coloration and the edge of the prop carefully for what look like little nicks. If everything is sound what you are doing is fine. I'm not an expert on electrolysis so this is just my humble opinion.
