Hi,
I'm curious about the proper orientation of the vents on the topsides of a cape dory.
Should one face forward and one aft? Should the two for the cabin face aft while the two for the engine face forward, to minimize the risk of flooding the dorades in heavy seas? My thought is that one facing forward and one aft in both positions would provide the best ventilation. Any thoughts.
Thanks

Depends which way the wind is blowing. <g>

One each way will provide one for inflow and one for outflow.

If you're sailing and seas are breaking over the vents, seal them up. I keep the covers on board just in case.

Re: vents
You are correct. Out of each pair of vents, one should face up wind while the other faces downwind. That applies to the pair for the cabin and the pair for the engine.rich wrote: Hi,

Remove the cowls in bad weather and install the weather plates.
Re: vents
True Dorades won't flood. My CD, and I expect yours, has plain Nicro Fico vents. A Dorade is a box with a baffle that directs the water away. If your vents sit on top of a molded-in box, you've got Dorades -- if they sit on the deck, you don't.The box was named after the yacht Dorade where they were first used -- in the 30's I think. Bruce Bingham's book shows how to build them -- a fairly simple affair. My engine vents are ducted to the engine space so one fwd and one aft works best.

The cabin top vent is a Dorade box. The two engine vents are just through the deck and vented to the engine space.
Was the Dorade box standard on the CD28?

Re: vents
Neil,
My 1981 CD28 (#307) has the Dorade box on the cabin roof and my 1980 CD27 (#186) has it too. On both boats the cowls (vents) on the fantail are without Dorade boxes or any water prevention means, but that is not all bad. The purpose of the vents on the fantail are to provide ventilation and cooling to the engine area and provide the enormous amount of air necessary for diesel powerplants. The fact that these vent into that area with flexible hosing may provide a means of water entering the area also, but they empty into the bilge as well, so pumping with bilge pump in the cockpit should keep the water problems to a minimum. Further, the hoses are usually clamped in a position such that the water would not get onto or really near the engine unless the boat is really being whipped around. These fantail cowls should be placed with one facing forward and one facing aft to provide proper ventilation circulation.
