Volvo Diesel Parts for Power CD 28

Post by Rich »

Had a disconcerting experience today at the local Volvo Penta marine dealer.
The bezel on the CD28 instrument panel for the voltmeter guage has cracked and I took the bezel to the Volvo Penta dealer to order a replacement. This dealer normally handles Volvo Penta gas marine engines, not diesels.
He advised me that it might be some time before he can order the part because the Volvo Diesel distributor (his source for Volvo parts) will only accept orders in excess of $40. He stated that he would have to wait for other Volvo diesel engine parts to be ordered before he could order mine. This doesn't sound quite right, but I thought that I would check with others before seriously questioning him about this or finding another, more direct source for parts.

Check out this web site for discount Volvo parts by mail. They may not have a minimum but you will pay shipping charges.

You might also check with VDO, which I believe is the manufacturer of the gauges. They might have a warranty or a customer service department that will help you. Back when I owned a B**liner, the gauges all leaked because they had been installed too tight. Faria had a lifetime warranty at the time and replaced all the gauges free! Nice folks. (When installing gauges, do not overtighten the nuts on the bracket holding it to the panel - just tighten until barely firm.)

I've had similar very negative experience in trying to get parts. My local Detroit Diesel dealer who is supposed to provied service and parts doesnt have a clue. The parts manager told me he doesn't even know how to order parts from Volvo. The local independant Volvo DIESEL service guys which are few and far between, will order parts when they get around to it, if they don't forget. The Volvo/Penta gas I/O service people look at you like your nuts when you say diesel. The good news is I have found one good source, however not cheap.

I have mail ordered from: Orr's Island Boatworks, Bill and Laurie Sweetman, 800-339-6777. They have many parts in stock and will ship ups the next day, if they don't you usually get it direct ship from Volvo Atlanta within a week. The only down side is they seem to charge list price. Of course this is a boat, so why should you expect to "save" money.

Good luck
Tony
