Critters growing on paddle wheel...

Post by D. Stump, Hanalei »

Does anyone have a good way to assure that critters, read that barnacles (sp), don't grow on the paddle wheel for the knot log? I noticed when Hanalei went on the hard last fall that they had grown right on the wheel, causing it to read erratically. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh, I did pull the transducer inside the boat at least once during the season to clean it, but the critters still managed to start to grow. Thanks for your help....

There is no way practical way to prevent them...if it's not barnacles it will be tunicates, bryozoans, coralline algae, or even mussels. I have the same problem and have taken a different approach. Instead of leaving the paddle wheel plug in there all the time, I keep the blank plug in and only put the paddle wheel in when I want it (which is not necessarily every time I go sailing)...most sailboats are unoccupied for about 95% of the time...unoccupied except for the critters finding a home on any non-painted surfaces.

No, I wasn't kidding....transducer paint. Available from a number of suppliers...but I have been getting my from West Marine. It comes in a small plastic bottle...size of a plastic asprin bottle....with an applicator attached to the cap. A small bottle lasts many season haulouts...about $7/bottle. I usually pass it around to other boats around me when we pull the boats. I believe it to be a TBT base paint...although you can not use TBT, of course, on your boat bottom.
Also great for those depth sounder transponder surfaces.
