I replaced the Volvo in my CD33 with a Yanmar 3GM and was very satisfied with the change. Quieter and with good power. Also replaced the prop and shaft at the same time. The work was done (very ably) by Orr's Island Boat Works, Orr's Island, ME 04066. They are Yanmar dealers and are very familiar with Volvos as well.

Mike, I cant offer advice but may be facing the same problem. My MD11C only has a few hours on it ( less than a 100 hrs) since it was rebuilt and is really hard to start, to the point that I don't trust it. Volvo was not much help - push the cold start button was the sum-total of their advice. Would like to know what problems you had and what engine you pick to replace it. Also do you have a crank for the 11c? I might be interested in buying it if you do. Thanks Dennis CD 33.

Save that engine!!! I have been a mobile equiptment mech for a looong time and I can tell you from experience about diesel cold starts. The preheaters need to be working especially if you live in a cool weather area.: Find your preheaters. Either glow plugs or an electric element in the air intake. Make sure there is electricity going to it and that they're actually getting hot. I work in a mining operation with a lot of diesels of all types and sizes and an unlimited budget to keep it all going. I just replace all the glow plugs. Also you need to hold the cold start button in for a full 30 seconds (time it if you need to). A simple book from the library on diesel engine theory usually educates almost anyone on managing the iron sail. Or ask a real working motorhead. :) alan
