The Yamaha 2 stroke 9.9 hp's throttle handle does slide back and down. I've checked many outboards and Yamaha is one of few manufacturers that allows the throttle handle to "fold" back and down. Not sure if it will fit in the Cd 25's well? It appears that the Yamaha 8 ( 2 stoke ) will fit, but I haven't tried it.Michael Dowd wrote: Have a chance to get a new Johnson Sailmater 9.9 (97) ...The throttle handle does not slide back and down the way ten year old Mercury does... all remarks welcome THANK YOU!!!

We have a sailmaster 9.9 that we installed in the mid 80s. Tightfit, but it will go in. The abundant torque loosened the motor mount so we fabricated a sturdier version. Well worth the effort, considering the marked improvement in power at the prop. Good luck.Michael Dowd wrote: Have a chance to get a new Johnson Sailmater 9.9 (97) ...The throttle handle does not slide back and down the way ten year old Mercury does... all remarks welcome THANK YOU!!!

I have an '83 Johnson 9.9 Sailmaster which fits just fine in the well with half inch spacers on the motor mount. Without the spacers the motor rattles on the back of the CD25's well. Last year I looked into putting a new outboard on the boat. The newer style Johnson 9.9 (with the larger and more rounded powerhead) did not look like it was going to fit without moving the mount significantly. It may still not fit. (This was based on looking at the new engine mounted next to one of the '83 style design and measuring from the mounting plate to the rear of the powerhead)Michael Dowd wrote: Have a chance to get a new Johnson Sailmater 9.9 (97) ...The throttle handle does not slide back and down the way ten year old Mercury does... all remarks welcome THANK YOU!!!
I also tried putting a friend's Yamaha 8 short shaft in the boat. The motor was about five years old and fit just fine. I never tried running it though. (The boat was out of the water at the time) I would be concerned about cooling water intake on a short shaft.
In the end I repaired the old Johnson and it's running well.
Best of luck.
