i just pulled the motor out on my cd26. i've got a honda 15 hp o.b. there is quite a bit of fouling not only over the intake screens but also inside the cavities behind them. the holes in the screens are too small to paint (2-3 mm) as the antifouling would clog them. i am concerned that i will have cooling problems if this continues. any thoughts? thanks. john churchill

fouling INSIDE my outboard

Re: fouling INSIDE my outboard
We found the same problem with the outboard in our former CD25.john churchill wrote: i just pulled the motor out on my cd26....
there is quite a bit of fouling....
The fouling grew to block our engine cooling and caused us to shut down. We were surprised at the extent of the blockage. Apparently the organisms could easily get through the screen to move in and then grew to completely block the passage.
We chose to take the engine out of the water when not running it. Wasn't too bad with a 6hp, may not be the solution for a 15.
Hope you have better results than we did.

Re: fouling INSIDE my outboard
I had he same problem with a buildup of growth inside the water intake screen that I could not get to mechanically, that caused overheating and a shut down on my 6 hp Johnson. I removed the engine, set it horizontal on the dock, and carefully poured muriatic acid [pool acid] in the intake. Foaming occurs immediately as the salts disolve, Flush with a hose and apply more acid if needed.Run the engine immediately to flush the entire system. John,
Apparently Honda wants to eliminate any particles from entering into the engine. This is probably an attempt to save the pump impeller and or sand/weed accumalation in the engine. My Yamaha does not have any such intake screens but I once had a problem (11 years ago) with sand accumalation in high motor traffic, shallow water areas. This was the days before I had a fresh water flush to the engine installation. Since the flush was added I have not had any reaccumalation. I have not experienced any excessive pump impeller wear (although I can imagine more) with such a design. It is a tough decision on which items one wants to protect the engine from...sand/weed or organisms. So I can only suggest the following for your consideration:
Remove the screens permanently then spray the cavities with antifoulant. That is better than the heat damage which can occur.

John, I thought you told me that with an OB you can keep your hands nice & clean. This is another beautiful theory slain by an ugly fact?
Seriously, has Honda offered any advice?
