cockpit grate

Post by Brian A. »

I'm considering adding a teak grate to the cockpit sole of my CD25 and seek advice on design and fabrication. Has anyone made one or know of anyplace that would make one to order? Will the grating interfere with drainage? Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks, BA

West Marine offers precut and notched teak strips as well as edge frames for easy assembling of cockpit grating. Even if you don't buy, the catalog listing has much useful info.

We have a teak grate on our CD28. It's made in 2 pieces, which makes the size and weight controllable.

>>Will the grating interfere with drainage?<<

If the grate would otherwise cover the drains, you can design the corners so they don't. Mine doesn't interfere... the drains are visible through the grating and water drains as well underneath the grating, which is far from sealed against the cockpit floor.

>>Anything else I should be aware of?<<

Be sure that you take into consideration the tiller, engine controls, etc., which might cause a problem with installation and removal. Another reason mine is in two pieces.

these grates are in my opinion very uncomfortable to stand on barefooted. there are ways to make them or other sustitutes outlined in bruce bingham's book "a sailor's sketchbook", prob still in print or available thru the library.

I agree, but I don't sail that way. Too many places to stub a toe or slip or whatever, particularly while going forward.

I know the usual wood of choice is teak but what do you think of using redwood. It is very rot resistant and does weather to a brown color. It is a very soft wood and inexpensive compared to teak. I have considered making one out of redwood for no other reason than using it as a learning experience before paying a fortune for teak.

P.S. I sail a Seasprite 23, another Alberg design.
