i'm new to boat ownership
my question concerns what is the best way to store a battery for the winter
is it best to leave it on the boat with one of the poles disconnected
or should i remove it entirely and take it inside for the winter

Hello,
Remove the battery from the boat and clean the outside surfaces. Be very carefull handling the battery as it is heavy, and the electrolyte is extermely corrosive. Wear safety glasses and old clothes.
Check the electrolyte level in each cell of the battery, top off with distilled water if necessary.
Place the battery on a non conductive surface such as dry wood, or plastic. Not on a concrete floor.
Put the battery on a maintenance charge if possible. If a maintenance charge can not be done then just charge the battery now and recharge in the spring prior to launch.

"It really all depends on the actual voltage that the charger maintains. We don't believe any manfacturer's data sheets. Use a trusted digital meter and make sure that voltage is in the 13 to 13.5 range." www.amplepower.com
