battery charger for CD 28 power

Post by Bill Stebbins »

Advice requested. How does one make the decision for or against a battery charger in addition to the alternator, and, if one is needed, how do I decide which size and type, in view of the now bewildering array of models out there? I suspect that how the boat is used and the amount of amperage required per unit time are the determining factors but how does one put a number on it. For example I have the usual lights plus a pressure water system, an electric windlass, and the usual electronics. Many thanks.

Bill.
I am not an expert in this area, but based on your note and assuming average boat usage and that you have 2 batteries, you could get a 10 or 15 amp charger, preferably with some float capability. The 50 amp alternator must be run for a fair amount of time to recharge average battery use. The permanent charger would seem to be a good investment to ensure battery capability and life. The prices for such a charger seems to be in the $110-$130 range per pages 485-486 of the 1998 E&B Master Catalog.
