am looking at a77 cd28 with the volvo md7a diesel engine. perhaps 1200 hrs on it. clock shows 800 hrs. appears very clean no apparent leaks of fluids anywhere. owner has taken maintenance seriously. added extra fuel filters and shut offs. cannot get mechanic to look at engine. any input from those of you who have experience with this engine. trouble spots, injectors,belts, thermostats, bearings , etc. i should look at or be aware of . volvo penta webpage does not list this engine anymore. no help from them. thanks for any input. ben

Ben, have you had a surveyor look at the boat? A good marine surveyor will be able to check out the engine for you. If the boat is out of the water, ask for a survey that includes checking the boat in the water and run the engine. If possible, be there when the survey is done.This way you will learn alot about the boat and engine. Good luck.

Check the post a couple of days ago about the CD30 Engine. The CD30 used the MD7A. BTW, the MD7A was discontinued in 1981, according to my local Volvo dealer.

I have a '77 CD28... the motor's been fine. Have a sea trial if you can and run the thing up to temp. A survey is a must, btw, and will usually pay for itself in what the surveyor finds.

We've got a FWC Volvo MD7B in our '83 CD30. Never so much as a whimper of a problem from her. I think the Volvo is an excellent engine, very strong, quiet and smooth.
