Tyhoon Questions!

Post by Robert Brody »

My friend just boat a 1974 CD Tyhoon Weekender. The boat is in fantastic condition...all restored and varnished. Almost everything is new/ or restored.
There is one problem. The wooden rub rail is pulling away from the glass. Does anyone know the fix for this???
Also: He wants a mast/deck light installed. Has anyone done this? Where did you rout the wire inside?
Also: She came with a brand new Yamaha 5 hp outboard. He's a bit worried about the weight of the motor of the bracket. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for any help!

depending on how bad the rail is pulled it could be as simple as geting a new screw or if the glass is striped more involved. Not being an expert I would say that if the glas wont hold a new screw one would have to drill the hole out larger than the screw, fill the new hole with epoxy resin and wen set redrill hole for screw.
cant help with light thoughts
Lastly, the 5hp sounds like it wont do any damage depending on how the size of the bracket. I have a 4hp on mine and its no problem. I wouldnt go any larger though, it would just be over kill.

I USE A NISSAN 5 HP LONG SHAFT OUTBOARD ON MY TYPHOON WEEKENDER. IT'S MOUNTED ON THE STANDARD TYPHOON BRONZE MOTOR MOUNT. IT HANGS THERE ALL SEASON AND HAS NOT HAD ANY EFFECT AT ALL ON THE MOUNT OR ON THE BOAT'S TRIM. THE MOTOR MOUNT HAS BEEN BOLTED THROUGH THE TRANSOM DECK AND BACKUP BLOCK OF 3/4 INCH PLYWOOD WITH STAINLESS STEEL BOLTS.
I WOULD NOT USE A BIGGER MOTOR ON THE TYPHOON - 5 HP IS ENOUGH POWER FOR ANY SITUATION.

Robert,
I would not worry about the motor as the others have said. As long as the mounting bracket is solid, a five horse should sit just fine. The rub rail could be a pain if there is rot in it or fiberglass problems underneath it. I would try the screw idea mentioned earlier and countersink it so you could fill the hole over the top of the screw head. As for the mastwires/spreader light - My Typhoon has no wiring, but my brother's has a spreader and masthead light which is wired down the inside of the mast, exits through a sealed hole in the front of the mast and is connected to a strange jack much like an XLR microphone connector, the three prong type. This lays flat on the coach house and the wires go through the cabin top here and run between the liner and the deck to the side of the boat. He has a small, homemade panel on the stbrd side of the companionway. It works well although it is easy to step on. You have to be careful to unhook it before you lower the mast! The connector is actually cracked but still seems to work. Anyway you would need to seal the holes in the mast and deck very well. There are different types of through the deck electrical connections in boat catalogs. This may be a job I take on soon as well! Good Luck, Hope this helps. Paul
