On Monday night we had a pretty good blow in the Midwest. The southwest wind pushed the water from Toledo up to New York leaving Sostenuto and the other boats on Otter Creek in the mud! There was no damage, but I thought you might be interested in some pictures. If so follow the links.

Great pictures. Hard to believe.
BTW: We have a slip at Presque Isle, Erie and have been thinking about purchasing the "Great Lakes Coast Pilot" you mention. Do you find it very useful?

Jim:
The Uniter States Cost Pilot Number 6 covers the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. It is particularly good for infromation on controling depths , overhead power lines and the like. The Cost Pilot is published by the Depattment of Commerce. When I firsted started sailing on the Lakes, back in the 70's, the Coast Pilot series didn't include the Lakes. There was a "Great Lakes Pilot" which was published by another agency. It was particularly useful because it listed steples, water towers and other features visable from off shore. The new one isn't that good but for $20.00 it's a bargain.

Bruce,
Neat pictures! Question is, after you careen her, scrape the bottom, repaint her, what happens when the water comes back??? Did she pop up like a cork, or did you have to do something special to keep the water out?

Dave:
The water goes up and down fairly slowly. There's no surge. The danger is that your dock lines may rip off your mooring cleats. I went to check on her again about six hours after I took the pictures. Sostenuto was still aground, but just on her keel. She was upright, supported by the water. She's on the hard for the season now. There was no damage.
