Typhoon Hull-Deck Joint

Post by John Halporn »

I just bought Typhoon #28 and I was wondering about the hull to deck joint. Is it just bonded, or do the screws through the toe-rail provide some important strength? The black adhesive seems brittle but intact, should I worry about this joint?
Also, the boat has seen a head-on collision hard enough to crack the hull horizontally about 1/2" below the bronze bow fitting back about 4 inches on each side. Can I just chip out the seperated glass and patch in several layers of mat and cloth? Thanks for any sugguestions!

John, the screws help secure the deck to the hull. The black adhesive serves as both a glue and a sealant. I would NOT remove the screws, unless you had a leak and you wanted to remove/reseal/(re bed)and re install the screws.
Your idea of fixing the damaged bow sounds fine. Use the glass or chopped strands to fill in the the cavity after you grind it out sufficiently. A dremel tool may be enough. Check a good fiberglass repair book for more detailed instructions.
Good Luck,
