Water lift mufflers: winterizing

Post by D. Stump, Hanalei »

I was wondering what is the best way to winterize a water lift muffler? The vessel is a CD-30, 1984, with a Universal 18, 14 hp diesel. Hanalei is going on the hard this week and before leaving her in the graving dock this weekend, I ran a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water from the seawater intake to the exhaust(ran her till I saw antifreeze coming out the transom (I then pulled the batteries so that the yard apes couldn't run her again and left the seawater intake closed). Is this the best way to do it, or should I drain the muffler. Draining is very easy, a small screw on the forward lower edge of the muffler can. I just don't know what is better corrosion wise. Will the muffler rust more empty or full?

Thanks for your input....

Dave:
I agree that filling with antifreeze is better than draining. With antifreeze in the system, if you forget to drain a part of the system, you are still protected.
However, on the 28's the plug in the water muffler has an attached zinc. If your drain plug has a zinc too, you should inspect it every year or so, so you can replace it when it disintegrates.

Dave,
Anti-freeze is good, but if you keep the boat in salt water run it for a few minutes with fresh water directed into the intake. After you have all of the corrosive salt water out use the anit-freeze.
