Can fiberglass contain poisonous substances? Is it an FDA approved material for water tanks? Are there any ABYC or other standards that regulate the use of fiberglass for water tanks?
I have actually seen one and thought it was a good idea, since one could build an integral tank into the hull. When I approached Robinhood marina with the idea, they strongly advised against it.
Any ideas or experience, anybody?

Herbert,
While I am not an Organic Chemist (one of my worst subjects !)and cannot expound at length or with authority about the many VOC's and other substances that would get into the water and into You. Nor am I a Marine Engineer that could speak to the difficulties of moulding an integral tank with the interior properly gel coated or otherwise sealed so the above mentioned noxious stuff would not get into your drinking water, and so the water would not create osmosis problems from the inside of the hull. However I can tell you, from experience that your water would taste yucky! Forever! Or at least well past your lifetime..........

Re: fiber glass water tank
I relief captained a 1975 Camper & Nicholson 42 this summer with GRP water tanks under the saloon sole and I can say the water tasted quite poor! The full-time captain was also having problems with the tanks peeling on the inside! Though there were good access holes to each of the tanks, there was no way to reach all areas to reseal, or even clean properly. The group ended up using jugs for water for that trip and others. I would indeed prefer stainless or plastic tanks.John wrote: Herbert,
