CD27 Bilge Pump

Post by Bob Hargrove »

I just purchased HULLABALOO, CD27, which was all of its original equipment. Last weekend I found out the bilge pump didn't work. The owner's manual says it's a Whale Gusher 6, I believe.

Does anyone know where I can get replacement parts for it? If, they are not available, what new "through deck" bilge pump would duplicate it?

Thanks, Bob

Bob:

I have the Whale Gusher 8 on my CD27...it gave up the ghost a while back and I got some pretty good advice from this board...bought a rebuild kit from either West Marine or BoatUS...can't remember which one...took it apart and rebuilt it....works a little better, but not great....then I bought a new strainer for the bottom of the hose in the strainer....still doesn't work great....I suspect I have a problem with the flaps inside the pump that are preventing me from getting a good prime....darned if I can figure it out....probably a problem somewhere with part of the hose also...who knows...so at this point, a new pump may be in order, but they aren't cheap and I hate to give up on this one yet....I keep a Beckson 6' handpump in a cockpit locker and this thing pumps more than a manual bilge pump anyway...I'll be looking for more answers to your questions.

Ours may be a bit larger in our CD33. Replacement parts are readily available as mentioned by Clay.

We rebuilt ours a few years back and it still didn't work. Then I cleaned well around the surfaces of the pump where the flaps seal and it has worked great ever since. Made me think I might not even have needed the kit but still glad I have newer and more flexible parts.

We also have backup pumps, one is the same pump mounted on a board with lengths of hose to suit and the other is a piston type.

Good luck with the fix.

Hi Bob...

I have either the same or similar pump also. Mine wasnt working so I got a rebuild kit put it in and it worked great for a while then quit. I took it apart and found crud holding the flappers open. Cleaned it out and it works... Last time I checked virtually every part was available as special order from West Marine. Sure beats the hastle of fitting a new one.

Call me lazy - but when mine went on my CD31 - I bought a new pump and a rebuild kit from the local West Marine. For the extra money - I didn't find it that expensive - I wanted the luxury and afety of a new pump. It took one evening to install (in the dark even) and came with a newer style cool flap cover. Works perfectly.
