Lazarette Paint

Post by Frank Vernet »

All CD Skippers

Just thought of another winter project :-)

My cockpit lazarettes desperately need cleaning and painting. Need both color and brand/type paint recommendations for these storage compartments.

Thanks in advance to all.

I used pettit boot top white on my bilge of our 34 hunter
It flowed nice, dried high gloss and it looks great. I would not hesitate to try this on the underside of a cover. craig

Don Casey's classic book on fixing up boats recommends good quality exterior latex housepaint. I took his advice.

I took one of the boards out that had the robin's egg blue shade that was used inside my cockpit lockers to Wal-Mart and had them color match it. Of course you are not bound by the old color, a nice beige or other light complementary color could add eye appeal. I used the semi-gloss paint and it came out great and still looks good after a couple of years.

I used a small roller for most of the work. Like most paint jobs, prep is the time consuming part. Get everything out. Clean thoroughly. Depending on how gung ho you are while hunched up inside a locker, I can pretty much promise you that you will be able to find areas that were not finished off at the factory. Sand down any rough spots and fill in holes. Scrub with a TSP mixture prior to painting (Mix TSP according to directions - it's plenty strong and does a good job final cleaning and paint prep for a new coat.)

If you are keeping your color scheme, one coat should do it. I'd probably try 2 coats for a color change.

A good winter project! Good Luck,

Dale

I painted my lockers with anti skid so when I jump in I don't slide to the bottom.
