engine

I now have a 1983 CD31 but the tags for the engine are gone . I believe the engine is a universal 5424 diesel . Three cylinders. Can somebody confirm that this would be the correct engine for this boat.

Thanks
Phil

The 5424 is the next size up from what you have in a CD 31. What you actually have the the M-25. The M-25 is also a three cylinder diesel. BTW the M-25 is not a 25 horsepower engine as many new owners incorrectly assume. It was originally 18 hp and then was reworked by Universal to be 21 horsepower. The Model 25 (M-25)has an engine block that was made by Kuboda for a Japanese tractor. Universal in Wisconsin did the marine conversion so that the bell housing, tranny, gauges, heat exchanger, raw water pump, etc. are Universal add-ons.

About ten years ago Universal (who also made the Atomic Four gas engines) decided to go out of the small boat engine business and only sell large diesels. They sold the small engine division to Westerbeke. Wherever you find Westerbeke engines sold you'll usually also find Universals sold and serviced. Westerbeke manufactures parts for them and sells the parts through all the usual engine parts houses, however at much inflated prices from the good old days.

It's a sweet little engine. Smooth and quiet, economical and very dependable, but it's also a little underpowered for a 31. The Hurth transmission is not a Kuboda item and is something Universal bought off the shelf and installed. It's also a little undersized for this size boat so you want to treat it with care.
