Oil change advice

Post by Bill Armstrong »

I put about 15 hours this summer on my engine (total hours on engine since rebuilding) and I want to change the oil. It's getting a tad dark. My only question relates to the oil filter. After draining the old oil, changing the screw on filter, adding new oil, then running the engine, will there be enough old oil in the engine to lube it prior to the new oil going thru the new filter? Engine is a Volvo MD2B on my 28' Morning Light. All the other instructions and advice I have. Thanks, Bill

Bill,

Diesel lube oil gets dark almost immediately upon running the engine, this is not unusual. Nevertheless you cannot change the oil too often.

A film of the old oil will remain to do its job for that period before the new oil begins to circulate. Be sure to fill the spin-on filter with new oil before installing it. The dipstick level takes into account the volume of oil expected to be contained in the filter.

Some people advocate turning the engine over several revolutions (5 sec or so) with the engine shutoff engaged to circulate new oil, then starting the engine. This is unnecessary if you have just changed the oil, as normally you want to drain the oil while warm, so everything will be well-coated with a film of old oil. However, it may be a good idea to do so after a seasonal layup of the engine, when the oil film may have dissipated.
