SLIMED!!!!!

Man, BAADDD oil spill here in Charleston, SC. We keep our boat afloat at the Cooper River Marina and we got slimed! We needed a bottom job but this wasn't waht I had in mind. I really feel for those with freshly painted boats who got trashed not to mention what this is doing to the already fragile environment.

Any sugestions on what to do for the boat (other than call our insurance agent)?

Well crud..what a thing to happen! In the past, I have only had small scale oil slime on the hull, and 409 sprayed on worked great, as it is a good degreasing agent. In your case, I have no idea how bad it really is. But consider trying 409, even try it warmed up a bit before you use it. I suspect that if it is as bad as my imagination says, you may go through a few sponges getting the oil off..

What happened to cause the spill?

409 will probably do. You may also try a solution of Dawn dishwashing liquid with a sponge or scrub brush. There is another product, Y-10 that I have used to get stains off of the bow. It may help after you get the gunk off.

Thanks for the article. That helps to see how extensive it is. I worked ICW tugs for a few years and we would haul a great deal of cargo up and down the Cooper River. I hate to see commercial or recreational vessels acting irresponsibly. It makes us all look bad.

I've had pretty good luck with Simple Green, and White Lightning is also pretty good (no, not THAT White Lightning).
