CD 30 and 31

Post by David Brownlee »

My wife and I have happily cruised our CD 27 "Windrush" on the Chesapeake for severals from our base in Havre de Grace, MD. We are now just *beginning* to think of getting soemthing larger, and we've been looking at the CD 30 and 31 in the CD brochures that we collected in the early 80s. We'd appreciate hearning from those who chose to by the 30 or the 31 and about the things you liked and didn't like about the two boats. On the face of it, the "B" layout of the 30 looks just about ideal for a couple, but I don't think I've ever seen one. Thanks! (And thanks for setting up this discussion service!) I've had my CD 30 now for some 14 years, and stilllove the boat. We sailed her from her old home portof Hyde Park, NY up to the far reaches of Maineand all over New Englad in the years we lived east. We found her to be ideal for two. We haveseen the "B" layout and found that to be lackingin storage for a long trip, though the head areawas indeed very nice.
The CD31 is reputed to NOT be an Alburg design, I did hear once from a guy who ultimately bought aCD30 that he had chartered the CD31..loved theinterior, but found the boat to be rolly and notas nice a sailer as the CD30. I think the CD31interior is absolutely great, but Cape Dory didn'thave that boat in the lineup for very long. That'sclearly hearsay, I'd go for a rrial sail, personally.
Whatever you buy, it will have the Cape Dory constructions standards behind it, and I don'tsee how you can go wrong, it's all a matter ofwhat characteristics you wish to have. I'd also recommend a sail on one before you buy to compare.

The CD31 use a the CD33/36 rigging and is more robust overall, yes and 9.8 Beam. The 30's mast is deck stepped where the 31 is keel stepped. The additional one foot beam is apparent. The aft head on th3 31 is really a pleasure.Yes and thanks for having this open forum availble.

Re: CD 30 'B' layout

Post by Brad Cote »

My wife and I seriously considered a 1989 CD 30with the 'B' layout last spring when we wereshopping for a boat. We passed and bought a different boat because the 'B' lacked a V berthup front (we like to sleep together withouthaving to rearrange the main salon). Also, thewater tanks were located under the port andstarboard settes, which reduced storage.
The boat had everything else we wanted...goodsailing characteristics, tons of equipment, windlass with 250' of chain (and a deck wash),and good overal condition. If it had been theregular layout, we would be CD owners today...

My wife and I recently purchased a Cape Dory 31 built in 1984. I have sailed the typhoon, typhoon sr.,30 and now the 31. The 31 is a sweet sailing boat which I have liked the best of all. Its biggest advantage over the 30 is a better cabin layout which is bigger than the 30. Also, the engine is bigger. Our boat has a 150 genoa roller furling which really helps power the boat. By the way the 31 ias definitely an Alberg design.
