You might have read my post about my boat getting hit and haveing the mast brought down. well now is the time for me to do some repairs. I just got done today taking all the rub rail and toe rail off. My question is about getting new teak for this boat. I need help with finding teak. for the side rail. I need teak planking about 19 feet long and one foot wide. In the NY, Long Island, area is there any place to buy this stuff? Any addvice on going forward on this project would be greatly appreciated. Pitt falls to look out for ect.
I also need a new mast. I called rig right but as I found out they are expensive. Any and all other suppliers for Typhoon hardware in the country would be appreciated.
thanks, Adam

Repair HELP !!!!

Re: Repair HELP !!!!
Adam: Try Kirkup's Lumber in West Islip (516) 665-0425. It's a great old fashioned yard with a good inventory of marine lumber. With respect to your rig, go for the best you can afford.Adam Z wrote: You might have read my post about my boat getting hit and haveing the mast brought down. well now is the time for me to do some repairs. Adam:
It's unlikely that you'll find a piece of teak ninteen feet long. What you'll need to do is to scarf shorter pieces together. I had to replace the rub rail on my CD28, and scarfed the pieces together. It worked fine. Get a copy of "The Sailor's Sketchbook", by Bruce Bingham, N.A. It tells you how to make a simple scarfing jig to do this.
Good Luck,

Re: Repair HELP !!!!
You already have two very accurate answers on replacing the rub and toe rail. The hard part and I would get this out of the way first, is whatto do about a new mast. Assuming that the insurance settlement is paying for it then you can call any of the companyies that advertise mast. I think one is Schaffer and they advertise in "SOUNDINGS". If your paying for it then I would scory the boat yards and see if you can find one that works. Good luck.

Re: Repair HELP !!!!
Adam,
Scarfing is definately the way to go. I recently bought teak from a local lumber yard. It was available as 1" x 8" x 6 ft unfinished boards at $19.50 a board ft. I.e. one board cost about $44.00. I would try the best lumberyard in your area. Not a chain store like Lowes, but a place where you can have moulding, etc built on site. Also recomend that you template using plywood or pine prior to cutting the teak. Good luck.

Re: Repair HELP? Insurance?
Adam,
Why are you worried about the cost of the mast? Isn't the other boater's insurance going to cover it? This was no fault of yours. You should be able to get your hardware replaced with the same quality hardware that you had. If you cut corners to save the other guy's insurance you will be making a mistake. You will not be able to come back in two years if something is not right and get it fixed up! Insist that everything be done to high quality standards. Remember it might be your family that gets hurt if something is not done well.
Good luck,
Matt
