Oil Change for Volvo MD7A
This is pretty basic stuff, but I am not real familiar with volvos. I would like to know what the best way to change oil in a volvo MD7A without making a mess. Any suggestions?
Re: Oil Change for Volvo MD7A
It's fairly simple to do this without a lot of fuss. Remove the used oil through the dipstick hole with a hand pump. Pump the used oil into a plastic container. A gallon jug with a cap works well. After draining, hold a couple of paper towels under the oil filter as you unscrew it. The towels should catch sop up any oil that will flow out. If you wait a few minutes between draining the oil and removing the filter, you'll have less oil in the filter. It's also good to wait for the used oil to drain to the bottom of the pan before you stop pumping.
The MD7A manual suggests changing the filter with every second oil change. I figure it's cheap insurance to change the filter every time.
NAPA carries oil filters for the MD7A. They're less expensive and easier to get than the official Volvo filters. NAPA also sells hand pumps for draining the used oil.

Re: Oil Change for Volvo MD7A, continued
After the seal makes contact, turn the filter only a half turn further. It should be snug, but not too tight.
The engine's oil capacity is 2.9 quarts. I usually pour in three, but I'm careful not to overfill. I check the dipstick before finishing off the third quart.
Be sure that the oil you use is intended for diesel use. Synthetic oils are reputed to cause the seals to leak.
With a bit of care, you should be able to change the oil with the sacrifice of a few paper towels.

Mike,
I had heard that Napa carrys filters for the MD7A, but my local stores don't have a cross-reference for them. What are the part numbers/manufacturer for the filters? Thanks!
