Curious when the sailing season ends on Lake Superior. May have the oportunity to transfer up that way for a few months but don't have my CD25 outfitted properly for ice-breaking. Thanks,Scott

Re: Lake Superior
I live in the Detroit area which puts me about 250 miles south of Lake Superior. I would guess the sailing season ends up there around the end of October. On the lower Great Lakes, its not uncommon to see sailboats on the lakes until late November or even early December. I usually haul my boat around November 15th.

Re: Lake Superior
Scott,
I sent off another reply to your question yesterday, but it apparently got eaten up by the bit bugs on hte way to posting..never appeared here.
So to repeat what I wrote..sort of.
We sail Superior from the beginning of April to mid November, but that includes some very cold weather..snow, sleet, hail, and winds in the 35-40kt range. We are actually living aboard from the end of March to the end of November, but the wet time is generally as stated.
Less enthusiastic (or nuts) folks would tend to sail from May thru Oct.
Where would you keep your boat at? We are in the Apostle Islands on the lakes south shore..a really unique sailing area with 22 uninhabited islands scattered over 800 sq.miles.
Cheers,

Re: Lake Superior
Scott,
I've been sailing up here for 7 years and while others on this board have some more time on the water than I do, I think I have a good grasp.
The season up here for hearty sailors is May-October and of course you can stretch that if you are closely following the weather and near your boat. July and August are the most boat-filled months and you can usually expect alot of fine weather with the occasional thunderstorm, some quite powerful. A Cape Dory can handle those if the captain can I reckon.
I sailed up the north shore of Minnesota around May 18th and it snowed and was freezing, however their was little wind so we got off easy. I would have liked abit more. Anyway, In May and September-October we can get some excellent if cool sailing days. Truly beautiful weather. The Lake creates its own local weather and there are some tricks she can play. I have seen the lake go from 35 knots of wind with 8 foot waves to dead flat and glass in under two hours. Of course the reverse is possible as well.
I would trust Larry's posts regarding this topic as I believe he spends more time aboard than most. When I captained in the Apostles, there were several seasoned skippers who really had some experience in the big stuff.
Hope this helps,
