companionway lock, screen
Having just made new drop boards I would like to replace the lock mechanism, and also insert a screen/hatch in the boards in my CD30. Does anyone have a source? Thanks.

Lock Mechanism? Do you mean the tang and slot? Parfait's are from Spartan. I have just refinished the drop boards and recessed the slotted plates such that the screws cannot scratch whatever they might be placed against, especially a sister drop board.
Parfait also has a couple of screen boards that were custom made. They replace the lower two boards, leaving the locking function to the solid drop board. I do not have a source for these; I think they were done by the same person who did hinged screens for the hatches.
Let me know if you would like photos.

Re: companionway lock, screen
I go along with the rest of those recommending Glebe Creek. We saw some of their products at the Boat Show in Annapolis and they're beautiful and very well made, but expect to pay $500 or more.
I had a one-piece tinted plexiglass companionway board made for about $70. 3/8" thick and just the thing to keep the early morning sun out of our eyes or for a bit of privacy at the marina. We didn't put a lock slot into it--it's for use when we're on the boat.

Re: companionway lock, screen
Hi Moonbow
I made my own companionway screen. I used 3/4" oak (because it is readily available here). I cut a 1 1/2" frame using the existing drop boards as a pattern. And while I would like to take credit for the "neatness" of the way the four boards were joined, I cant. I took them to a local cabinet shop and they charged me either $10 or $20 (I have slept since then) to join the boards. I then stained the wood and installed bug netting. It looks very good but is a bit large as it is a one piece design. And a bit of a hassel storing it. But it fits well and keeps the bugs out.....I'll try and get a pic this weekend and post it if anyone is interested.

Re: companionway lock, screen/thanks
Thanks for the in-put. I'm still searching, but it looks like Sparten is the direction. MichaelMichael wrote: Having just made new drop boards I would like to replace the lock mechanism, and also insert a screen/hatch in the boards in my CD30. Does anyone have a source? Thanks.

Ken:
I'm curious as to how you can "lock" a boat with screens in place? What prevents a person from simply putting a fist thru the screen and climbing thru the screened opening?

Re: companionway lock, screen
Randy,
Well, of course, you aren't really going to lock up anything that is screened unless you use stainless screening of a sustantial gauge or have only small openings, like port holes. When we are aboard, we use a slide bolt on the inside of the companionway; the solid drop board will make it a bit more difficult to find the lock and unlock the hatch. Hopefully, the confusion factor will give us enough time to respond according to the threat.
Photos of the screens should be available before the weekend; if anyone wants a copy, let me know via email.
