I've been reading posts here for almost 4 years. I've read with mild curiousity the posts surrounding seacock maintenance and Morey's Red stuff. Never gave it much thought, never in fact looked at my own seacock, just assumed it worked. Decided last night, 12 hours before launch, to take it apart. Stopped at the local NAPA and asked for famous red stuff by part number. They didn't have any of course. They did have some sticky, red grease that was rated for water pumps and high pressure so I took that. Got to the boat, got out my CD manual and proceded to disassemble the lone seacock. Came right apart, absolutely smooth barrel, no trace of grease anywhere on the thing. I'm thinking maybe I've found a source for my slow bilge leak that's been plaguing me for years.
I feel a little sheepish for having neglected this fairly important piece of plumbing for the four years I've owned the boat. I chalk that up to the scary stories I've read about frozen seacocks and about finding the perfect grease. Now that it's done, it's not so intimidating. I'll let you know if this cured my leak.
