Anyone repowered a CD 30?

Post by Ed Hatch »

I have a CD 30 Cutter powered with a Volvo MD7A coupled to a Walter
V-Drive. The Volvo is very tired and needs replacement. I'm trying to find out
if I can make a Yanmar 2GM20FV [18hp with a 15degree V-drive] fit. It looks like the old Walter V-drive is close to 25 degrees. Has anyone tried repowering with the Yanmar? Has anyone found an engine that can be coupled to the Walter V-drive? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I rebuilt my MD7b two winters ago, and I now have a zero time engine that starts on the first compression stroke. It cost me $2200, plus about $125 for crane useage (that engine comes out very easily..30 minutes is all it took us to free it up, mark the wires, take pictures and pull it out using an aluminum I-beam attached to the crane's hoist. Add in the cost for new filters and misc., we spent around $2400 to do this.

I priced a replacement engine from Yanmar and Westerbeke. There is an engineering firm down in the Southeast (Carolinas I think) that will make a personality plate for the existing reverse gear/v-drive to match with a new Westerbeke 18 hp diesel (perfect drop-in fit for the bed and mounting bolts, although the v drive will protrude exactly 1 in. further toward the companionway steps (there is room)). They wanted $6000 for everything including shipping to NW Wisc. This was two years ago almost.

All said, I am glad that we rebuilt the Volvo. That puppy is one hunk of iron, but it is made to run continuously from oil change to oil change with no interruptions. Everything is heavier than the HP dictates. However, parts are particularly horrendous in cost (inj. pump is $4800 new at DePetro Kay (sp?)). So you makes your choice...

Best of luck,
