Mokita is half-way home!

Post by Ed Haley »

Many of you know that I purchased Mokita, a CD330, last fall and last week we began the trip to bring her home from Mystic CT to Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The course was laid west through Long Island Sound, north up the Hudson River, west through the Erie Canal to Three Rivers then north through the Oswego Canal and Lake Ontario. We readied everything and began the trip early Monday, May 6th.

To make it short, we had a nice sail through the Sound, motorsailed up the Hudson, and drowned in cold, wet misery along the Erie - halfway, anyways. Then on May 14th they decided to close the canals - the Erie and the Oswego becasue of high water and much floating debris. The sailing gods were with us when the closure involved only the locks behind us and not the two ahead that we needed to make it to my home town in Central New York. But as of today (May 17) the Oswego is scheduled to be closed for another week. That should give us time to dry out and warm up.

By the way, Mokita performed flawlessly. Great boat!

Ed,
Sounds like a wonderful trip. I'm curious as to what you did at night? Did you plan ahead and stay at predetermined marinas/clubs/anchorages? Did you spend most of the nights on the boat or did you spend many ashore? Any memorable places for those of us who might contemplate making a voyage even part of the way into Upstate New York? I hope the rest of your trip is uneventful but pleasurable!

We had a great time on the sound and on the Hudson since the mast was still stepped. Because of the cold, wet and dreary time on the Erie Canal, it was challenging at times to keep warm. We enjoyed the event at any rate and look forward to maybe in a week when the Oswego Canal opens up. Have to make the Niddle regatta on June 1st.

We anchored out on the sound and on the Hudson whenever the proper time approached. On the canal we were able to take advantage of the terminal walls at the locks when the locks closed at 5:00 pm. Right now, some of the boats "caught" on the canal when it temporarily closed are tied up inside the locks awaiting the waters to open.

I'm not a fan of staying in marinas prefering to anchor out when there's the chance. But once or twice a week it's nice to take advantage of the facilities to rest and/or clean up.

Captain Heintz:
My apologies, SIR, for passing your titular kingdom on our transit to our sailing grounds. You are entirely correct. I may be flogged and chained by your underlings but please accept my humble reasoning for bringing Mokita to the hinterland. I was ascared of winning the CDSOA Race at Bartletts Reef while racing with your most distinguished highness. Therefore, I begged retreat from the racing festivities so that I could hand the trophy over to you. As I passed over the racing course, I became positive that that would be the case.

On the day of the event, I shall be listening for a three-balloon salute as you accept your award.

Your servant under duress,

Captain Haley,

You sir, have been brought up all standing! One would think that you would have at least had a cannon salute fired when passing the esteemed anchorage of our Fleet Captain. I trust that this was an oversight, and not intentional, and because of that punishment will not be awarded THIS time......I remain sir, your most HUMBLE servant.....

Esteemed Captain Stump,

As Nautical Traditions Officer, I will respect your decision regarding the non intentional oversight of Captain Healey.

I do however suggest that we keep an eye on him for future offenses!!!

Oh Lofty Fleet Captain Heintz,

Did you take notice that our Nautical Traditions Officer showed a decidedly uncharacteristic spot of leniency towards our esteemed colleague, Captain Ed? I fully concur with his recommendation but what are we to make of this uncharacteristic pronouncement? A moment of weakness or charity? Or, perhaps its a more sinister consideration by Capt Stump to rile a competitor in a well advertised competition in the eastern Sound later this summer? Is he capable of such subterfuge??
