Long Island Sound's Bottom

Long Island Sound's Bottom
I got a new Fortress Anchor yesterday and it says you can set if up with either a 32 degree shank/fluke angle for sand, or a 45 degree angle for soft mud. That got me to thinking about LI Sound's bottom. I realize that it isn't homogeneous, i.e. all mud or all anything else. In general, for all you LI Sound sailors who anchor out, what is the bottom like in most of the LI Sound anchorages. I'll be sailing primarily in the Western Sound although I refuse to be limited to that area.
Thanks,

Warren,
Don't know much about the LI shore side however This past season I've set anchor from Charles Island off Milford CT. to Mystic CT. and found only mud.. hope this "kelps" (you'll find lots of that around also!)I've held onto the bottom in some Active weather with just a little danforth.. so far anyway !

For the most part, the western end of Long island sound has good holding. I hail from city island....if you prefer not to anchor, there are plenty of clubs and marinas with moorings or slips.
I am a member of the city Island yacht club.....guest moorings are $25....full food service fri, sat, sun or plenty of eateries on the island.
have fun,

Re: Long Island Sound's Bottom
Hi Warren , I think you'll fine most adjacent areas to us to be mostly thick mud (Huntington, Lloyd Harbor). Take care Jody K (Cygnus,Huntington).Capt JT wrote: Warren,

Re: Long Island Sound's Bottom
Warren,
Get ready for alot of mud. Most of the protected harbors and inlets have this. As for going out to more open areas (off of Westport or Southport) look for some sand. Get ready to shake the mud off is your best bet.

Re: Long Island Sound's Bottom
Thanks everyone for your replies. Dirty old mud but it holds well! Hmm> Maybe I should look into getting one of those pressure washers hooked up at the bow to blast off the mud when we weigh anchor! Alas, not this year. It looks like the tea bag technique for cleaning the anchor.
