weight limit for Spartan Motor Bracket for 19' Typhoon?

Post by Michael Cattafe »

Can anyone tell me what the weight limit might be for a Spartan Motor Bracket for a 19' Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender. The label says "6 hp rating". I am looking to put a 5 hp, 4-stroke motor on this bracket. Because the 4-stroke is a heavier motor, I am wondering if I am reaching the limit of the weight for the bracket and the strength of the deck fiberglass area where the bracket is mounted. Spec. says it weighs 55.4 lbs. Thanks, in advance, for any input.

I think you should turn the question 180 degrees and ask yourself what is the smallest motor you can get by with. The more weight you hang off the stern the worse she will sail and under rough conditions you would be better off sailing her as much as you can rather than motoring. Four stokes are nice, but they all need to visit weight watchers. If you are only needing to get to the dock and the conditions are not that bad, can you get by with a 5 hp two stroke at half the weight or better yet a 3 hp or better yet, can you sail in and forget the motor?

In addition to the compromised sailing characteristics inherent in hanging a heavier motor off the stern, you'll wind up moving your bootstripe up, and up, and up, and up! Been there! Still doing it!

Ditto that! Even at 40# my 5hp Tohatsu is way too heavy!
