Want to buy small Cape Dory or Sea Sprite

Post by Ed LaFreniere »

Greetings! I am looking to buy a small Cape Dory -- Typhoon, weekender, perhaps a 25, that's in good shape and has good sails and motor. Would prefer one with trailer (or, if you have boat only, any hints on whether trailer would be available or advisable, and general information about costs). Also interested in Sea Sprite 23. I live in Connecticut. Would appreciate replies and any guidance that anyone would care to volunteer.
Thank you kindly!

Sea Sprite vs. Cape Dory

Post by Harris »

If you have cruising in mind and ease of handeling...go with the CD 25. If you like putting the rail under and dont mind reefing early..go with t he SS 23. Although both are Alberg designs and look similar at a glance..thats where the similarity ends. The SS 23 was designed in 1957 under the old Cruising Club of America (CCA) handicap rules. This rule gives benifit to the 16 foot waterline of the SS. In turn the boat is designed to heel 30% which extends the waterline length to 20 feet of so. The CD 25 or the Typhoon for that matter heel about half as much in equal winds. An interesting fact is that Carl Alberg was John Aldens head draftsman. The SS is a throwback to that era of powerful wooden keelboats. The CD line was designed in the 70's with a morepracticality in mind. The boats are much fuller. I've spent 19 years enjoying the sailing abilities of the SS 23 and wouldn't trade it for the world. As I only sail inshore these days..if I did it over again I would choose another Alberg favorite...the Ensign.

Hi Ed,

Tough decision. Both are fine boats. It will boil down to what you plan to do with the boat. Both will take you where you want to go. The SS23 is more performance oriented, the CD22 has a bit more elbow room below. But don't discount the large vee berth in the SS23 which is under that large foredeck. CD has the best hardware.

If I can be a little old fashion about it. The only way to tell is to sail and look at both of them. The SS23 is really a "joy" of daysailing. The CD22 is really a nice sailing, quality built boat.
But you will really need to compare the sail plan, hardware, interiors, motor access, foredeck space, cockpit area, and how it sails.

For SeaSprites in your area (RI and more) contact:

Bob Russel at Peregrinee@aol.com
He is head of the SeaSprite Association (23,28,30 and 34s)
Another member at SeaSprite@aol.com puts out a newletter

I strongly urge you to look and perhaps make arrangements to take a sail.

You have probably seen my websites on both boats but I have listed a link below to take you to them if you have not.
