(new?) history info

Post by chuck yahrling »

I was poking around the Coast Guard Navcenter web page and found a HIN index. (http://www.navcen.uscg.mil/gnab/search.htm). When I entered CPD I got the usual info about the Taunton Operation, but noted that according to the USCG, molds and such were acquired circa 1992 by Cape Dory Yachts, Inc out of Amityville (LI) NY. NEWPORT SHIPYARDS CORP , the parent company, was in business in Hollywood, FL until 8/8/97.

Anybody ever try to track down CDN or Newport? Any CDNs ever built?

Chuck,
I live in Massapequa, just next door to Amityville. I visited the Newport Ship Yards facility when it was operating from the old Sumner Boat Yard. To the best of my knoweledge, they built at least two 40 foot power yachts before I realized they had closed down the operation. I recently noticed what appeared to be the hull mold for the CD28 PY in the yard of Ronback Marine, also located in Amityville. If I confirm that the mold is indeed for the 28, I'll post a message.
Hope this helps.

Some of this information, and the location of many of the molds, is on this Cape Dory web site - click "About Cape Dorys" at the top of the main message page.

I understand that Robinhood is now building 33 powerboats, so apparently the 30/33 molds have gotten back there.
