Ty Main Sheet Rigging?

Post by Mike Raehl »

Can someone describe how I should rig the main sheet on my 1984 Typhoon? I bought her last fall with the mast down so did not see how the main sheet was set up. The boom has two movable tangs on the end and a small becket block is pinned through both tangs. I think this is wrong in that one of the tangs should connect to the topping lift and the other one should have the block. As to the main sheet, there is the becket block on the boom and two standing blocks on the stern deck in line with the cam cleat. Seems simple enough except that there are two more standing blocks on the stern deck mounted very near the port and starboard rub rails about even with the deck cleat. How are these reeved in conjunction with the two blocks in line with the cam cleat?

Thanks in advance for suggestions.... a three dimensional schematic would be great.

I think you have it figured out. The outboard blocks may have been used for spinnaker sheets.

Another possibility is that the outboard cleats are for a bridle, similar to one that I once had on a 12ft sloop rigged O'day - I believe the mainsheet was fastened to the boom, went through a block on one aft corner, crossed the stern, went through a block on the other aft corner, back up and through the block on the boom, then I think it ran along the boom to another block, then down to a block/cam cleat combination on the centerboard trunk. Could yours go boom to outboard block, across to 2nd outboard block, up to boom (therby creating a triangle & somewhat mimicking the function of a mainsheet traveller), then back to the standing block & cam cleat?
Or a double loop back to the boom for greater leverage (is the block at the boom a single or a double?)?

Good luck.

Mike:
If you go to the "About Cape Dorys" section of this website, you'll see where you can download an owner's manual. The manual has drawings of how to rig the mainsheet, along with other useful stuff.

tie a bowline into the becket on the block on the boom tang. run down to the aft block on the stern deck and pull it thru fore to aft. go back up over the sheave in the boom becket block aft to fore and then back down to the fore block on the stern deck passing it aft to fore on the bottom of the sheave. then through the cleat on the aft edge of the cockpit.
the two blocks on the stern quarters are there for the spinnaker sheets.

Great help.... thanks. I did get a spinnaker with the boat so that will be another challenge and questions later in the season.
