I recently acquired a fine CD22, a great boat to look at and to sail. I was, however, shocked to experience the exhaust problem. The engine is a 1986 Johnson 8 which exhausts partially underwater but primarily onto the curved hull surface in the well. When underway, the water beneath the well closes the air passage and all the smoke blows around in the cockpit.
Can anyone recommend a modern engine with forced, 100% underwater exhaust that will solve this problem.

Pete, I've not had the pleasure of being aboard a CD22, but if your engine is mounted in the same place as the CD25 than I'm familar with your problem. Many of the 25's have modified the engine to solve the problem. The engine exhaust is mainly directed out the prop (or above it, if a reverse thrust kit has been added). When the engine is idling there is not enough pressure to force the exhaust out against water pressure. So they put idle relief ports above the water (below the power head). In an enclosed compartment the fumes build up and the engine can choke out on them as well as fumigating the cockpit. The easy solution is to tap the idle relief ports for a fitting and then attach a flexible tube used for connecting faucets to the water supply. These can be bent out of the well and extend above the water at the transom. In the 25 you can then run with the hatch closed. Hope this helps. If I can supply any additional info drop me a note.
