Stripping Cetol?

Post by Diana »

We used Amazon Teak Stripper to get the Cetol off our CD 25. Scraped most of it off, but it is hard to get the Cetol out of the grain of the wood. I tested an area with teak cleaner and I have nice clean teak with black grain where the cetol won't come out. Tried 100 grit sand paper, brass brush and bronze wool - still can't get it out. Any ideas - other strippers?...machine sanding? I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks!
Diana

You need a good sharp scraper and gently "plane" the wood down until it's smooth. Then sand with a high quality paper, 60 or 80 grit. It's a lot of work. Ryobi makes a 1/6 sheet palm sander that is very nice. You can do most of your toe rail with it, other parts as well. Only costs $35 or so. If you use 3m's "stick it" paper, you'll find it fits the ryobi sander perfectly. Makes for very quick changes of paper.

Any paint stripper that would remove the cetol will also eat your gel coat. Not a safe thing to do.

good luck
