My old Volvo MD-7A cooling system corroded out, and
it was not realistic to repair & rebuild.
As of three years ago, Volvo did not have anything
that would directly fit in and replace it.
Its on a very short mount base & the best replacement I
found, taking everything into consideration was an 18 HP,
2 cyclinder Yanmar. I used raised beds made out of aluminum,
treated & painted, replaced w/ a longer shaft, and put the
largest diameter Prop, a 14" on it. I saved about 120 lbs.
as well, with the 2GM20F, and found their thick installation
manual invaluable. I put a shaft seal on the new extended
shaft, which I am still sorting out. The Yanmar has V-E-R-Y
soft mounts. While the engine should be very close in fuel
consumption, I had a new extended aluminum fuel tank welded
up, to fit in and extend back to the cockpit drain seacock.
It added about 4 gallons to the standard tank, and just fit
in through the cockpit locker, which was one of the limiting
dimensions. If anyone wants further details, let me know and
I'll share what I've learned. Lived aboard for seven years
when I lived on Florida's East Coast. Good Offshore Boat!!!
