A Good Read

If you need a fun read until your CD gets in the water, or need a good book at anchor, try "MUSKRAT, A Surprise Bid for the America's Cup" by Douglas Hanks Jr. You might try getting it from your local library. The story begins in Oxford, on Maryland's Eastern Shore, on a snowy day when the watermen end up at Dryden's Tavern for the day because of the weather. Before the day is done they decide to build an unusual boat for the America's Cup Race. There is a great episode where someone recounts a very colorful skipjack race. If you sail, have sailed, or plan to sail on the Chesapeake, it is extra good reading.

I hope they didn't build a catamaran.

I keep my boat in Oxford ---- the town featured in this book---- Hanks captures the tone of the people and the town very well. Drydens tavern is really called Popes tavern and sports a different atmosphere these days but the book is a great read. Enjoy

Hi, I did a search on "abebooks.com" and they had about 5 copies listed from $9 up to $100. Most were in the $9-$12 range. I recommend abebooks for those who like to find out of print books.
