I have a 1976 ty that I am trying to revive. I am new to CD's and "the fine art of fiberglass repair" so I need guidance. The deck around the bow cleat sounds hollow when I ping it. Also, there is an obvious sag in the deck between the chainplate and the porthole. Can I sand off the no-skid and replace the fiberglass? Secondly, while I am at it, can I build up the sag with fiberglass to recreate the original lines?
Thanks for any advice.

Ty deck problems

Re: Ty deck problems
We've had our 1974 TY for nearly 20 years. They had a problem with mast compression pushing the deck down, somewhat as you describe. We ended up having a compression post installed inside the cabin directly under the mast extending through the sole to the keel. They jacked up the sagging deck and fit it in. No more problems, except the portapotty won't fit all the way back in there. I didn't consider building up glass to solve the sag; I suspect that would also add lots of weight.

Re: Ty deck problems
tom,
got a '76 myself. redid the non-skid last year and also the foredeck cleat. there were lots of crazing cracks around the cleat, so i decided to cut out a square around the cleat (about 6"). after removing the top layer of fiberglass decking i discovered the balsa core was bad under the cleat. i removed the core, elongated the cutout fore and aft to about 8", epoxied the bottom skin, slid in a piece of marine grade plywood, epoxied that in, epoxied the top and sides of cutout to get a new deck surface using west system epoxy with 407 filler, sanded to level, restored the non-skid and finally reinstalled the deck cleat.
can't help you with the sagging deck. don't have that problem, but you definitely need a compression post. see joel's pictures from a few threads ago. looks like a nice job.
