Has anyone recently trucked boat to west coast
Has anyone recently had their boat trucked from New England to
California in or around the Los Angeles area and if so approximately
how much did it cost and could you recommend the trucking company. I am getting quite a spread on estimates The boat size that I am considering moving
is a CD 30.

Re: Has anyone recently trucked boat to west coast
I had mine trucked texas to chicago. I found company on yachtworld.com Both boatyards(departure & arrival) said driver packaging of mast & boat was among best. Marine express. I have been told @$2.45 mile, but go for $2.00/mile, or for that distance,$1.60 to $2.00/ a mile. Be carefull, try to get a company that has good AIR SPRINGS ON TRAILER SO IT DOES NOT HIT BOTTOM. Somehow determine they have good equipment. I have heard horror stories. (some on this site). John Serrano

The former owner of my boat (CD 28) had it hauled from Vermont to Long Beach CA in l998 for a bill of $7000.00 Don't know who did it but he was not a happy camper.
Try Dudley Boats (on the West Coast) for information on hauling a boat from the East Coast. They hauled mine (or ex-his) from Long Beach to Anacortes WA. (in February) two years ago for $2000.00 and did a great job in getting it here in one piece!

Re: Has anyone recently trucked boat to west coast
Last August I had my CD28 moved from Dallas to Ventura CA. I used Barbour Trucking (which was referenced on this site somewhere) and talked to a guy named Mark Frazier(800)756-2510. Cost was roughly $2300 and I could not have been more pleased with the service. The driver arrived when he was supposed too on both ends, and other than the expected scuff marks and chafe marks, dust, sand, diesel soot, etc, she arrived in perfect condition. When you consider the cost and trouble of finding another boat of equal condition, paying the taxes, survey, and broker fees, I felt the money well spent.K Hill wrote: Has anyone recently had their boat trucked from New England to

Re: Has anyone recently trucked boat to west coast
If you want to comparison shop, another mover I'd recommend is A&B out of Annapolis. They moved my CD36 from Wisconsin to the east coast a few months ago. I packed the boat up, so I can't vouch for their capabilities in that regard. Peter is the driver I had -- good guy, very knowledgeable.

Re: Has anyone recently trucked boat to west coast
I used A&B almost 2 years ago. In the spirit of being factual I won't speak of the emotional distress.
They delayed picking up the boat about 5 weeks (one week at a time) from when they said they would, all while I was paying for dry storage. I had to call each time to see if it was loaded - they never proactively called me to let me know of a delay. At least once they admitted they had sent the truck scheduled for me to pick up some other boat (a large commercial craft). All other times it one excuse or another; truck broke, driver sick, etc.etc.
They only managed to come get the boat (it was at Bert Jabin's yard in Annapolis where they have a facility) after I called them to fire them. They agreed to pay the dry storage fees caused by their tardiness, but it took some heated negotiations.
It took them about 3 weeks to get to the west coast, and my boat was hit by another truck while they were at a rest stop in Montana. That could have happened to anyone. We worked through the claim process, and they did pay up - but it took a couple of weeks to resolve.
Bottom line (and as a result of many subsequent discussions with others who have had success), if I have to do this again I will be using someone else. Dudley's here in Washington has excellent references - and he helped me find someone else who could have picked up my boat in ONE DAY which allowed me the leverage for the negotiation. Caveat emptor!

Re: Has anyone recently trucked boat to west coast
PS the quote for my CD36 was $6,900. (Dudley said it was a "low-ball" bid). Prep was another $1k, and I did a major portion of it - they did the mast, lifelines etc. I don't recall what re-commissioning was as there was the repair costs (plus new barrier coat) in the same invoice, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was another $1K. Surely, the CD30 would be cheaper.

Re: Has anyone recently trucked boat to west coast
I paid $4,500 to move my 36' CD from Port Clinton OH to SoCal in spring of 1999. I used a company in Michigan that was very good. They quoted me a lower price because they were going to pick up a boat in San Francisco going back to Michigan, but this never happened, so they had to deadhead back to Michigan - they didn't charge me a higher price even though things changed on their end.
One caution - don't keep tarps on. I thought I'd save some cleaning by keeping the blue shrink wrap on and it lasted all the way to Texas, until a storm blew it apart. The driver was kind enough to remove it as soon as he could stop, but not soon enough to stop the boat from becoming blue speckeled! It came off well enough, but could've been a problem. Let me know if you want more information. Tim
