To All;
I appreciate very much everyone's comments and participation on this sensitive subject. My interest was piqued by recently published events, and although the subject/occurance is rare, it is, nevertheless, real...having never formed an opinion myself, I respect everyone's position on both sides of the issue, but would not want to encourage an endless, heated debate. As some have already indicated, there is good dicussion on other sites such as sailnet.com and rec.boats.cruising...with these references and the posts on this bboard, I would like to suggest closing the thread, and returning to more pleasant discourse.

Hear, Hear!
How about take it off the board and continue in private amongst those interested?

Re: Guns & Pirates - Let's Close the Thread...
I have just had a chance to read this whole thread. Clearly it is of concern to the whole community of sailors. One matter not yet mentioned is that Sir Blake was boarded on a 119' Sailing vessel. This I think is hard to grasp. The sheer scale of this must have been part of his thought process.
We are fortunate to be able to have this discussion with 20/20 hindsight.
I find that Operating a vessel is improved when cool calm reason is applied to any challenging situation aboard. From mechanical to weather related. And of course interpersonal.
That said, I do not put myself in Sir Blake's league as a Sailor and would be loath to criticise someone who cannot defend himself.
